Wessington Springs, SD

Wessington Springs is a city and the Jerauld County seat in central South Dakota. The townsite was founded in 1880 and platted in 1882, during the region's agricultural settlement period. Its larger boom came in 1903 when a Milwaukee Road branch reached town from the east, giving the county seat a rail connection and a stronger place in the surrounding prairie trade.

Education and civic buildings add another layer. Wessington Springs College operated from 1887 to 1968, and the town still has a strong set of historic landmarks, including a Carnegie Library, a 1905 opera house, the 1936 Municipal Field House, the Jerauld County Courthouse, and the United Methodist Church. The Old Grade Trail follows a former road toward the Wessington Hills and the present Highway 34 corridor. Main Street, the courthouse, park buildings, and the old rail route keep the early town plan visible. Wessington Springs is a county-seat town whose character comes from prairie settlement, rail growth, schools, and surviving civic places.
