West Alexander, PA

West Alexander is a Washington County census-designated place in Donegal Township, less than a mile east of the West Virginia line. The settlement dates to 1796 and later became a borough, giving the village a long border-crossroads history. The borough government ended on January 1, 2009, when West Alexander became part of Donegal Township, but the old center still carries its own name and historic outline.

Main Street and the West Alexander Historic District hold much of the older story, while the Blaney Mays Covered Bridge and Margaret Derrow House add nearby markers from the region's earlier building traditions. McGuffey School District serves the community. The village streets, older homes, and road junction fill out the center. The place sits where Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Washington County roads come close together, so its scale is village-sized but its map is regional. West Alexander remains a named center inside a larger township, with the border, preserved buildings, and former borough lines all visible in the local landscape.
