About West Columbia
West Columbia is a Lexington County city across the Congaree River from Columbia. It was incorporated in 1894 as Brookland, though the postal service used New Brookland because another Brookland already existed. That riverfront position still gives the city much of its appeal, especially around the bridges and access to downtown Columbia. West Columbia feels like an older inner suburb with its own streets and small businesses, part commuter town, part river city, and closely tied to the capital region.
