About West Glendive

West Glendive is a Dawson County CDP on the west side of the Yellowstone River, directly across from Glendive. The 2020 census counted 1,998 residents. Interstate 94 crosses the river nearby, and Montana 16 begins here before following the Yellowstone toward Sidney. That makes West Glendive the bridge-and-levee side of the Glendive area, with the river doing most of the local orientation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the West Glendive levee in 1959, a reminder that river access and river management are part of the everyday map.

The west bank's homes, levee, and highway approach make up the local scene. Glendive's railroad-era downtown, Dawson Community College, Makoshika country, and county services sit across the water, while West Glendive keeps its own spread-out homes, roads, and river edge. The Yellowstone also ties the community to eastern Montana's ranching, farming, and badlands landscape. West Glendive's local scoop is a small river-side place where the interstate, levee, and Yellowstone all meet at the edge of Glendive.
