West Hamlin, WV

West Hamlin is a Lincoln County town along the Guyandotte River, five miles west of Hamlin. The river gives the place its setting and its older working story: before highways did the connecting, the Guyandotte carried timber, farm goods, and manufactured supplies through the rugged hills. West Hamlin grew near the Falls of Guyan, where the river's crossing and nearby roads made a natural meeting place. In the late 1840s, locks and dams were built to move coal and timber, and steamboats used the river for a short period before a flood in 1861 destroyed the works.

The town later became an export point for farmers working the small hill farms south of the Ohio Valley, with railroad access following the river. Today West Hamlin's identity still comes from that valley geography: river, ridges, roads, and the short run to Hamlin's county services. The town's name says exactly where it sits—west of the county seat—while the Guyandotte gives it a much older sense of direction. West Hamlin is an Appalachian river town whose story runs through timber, water transport, small farms, and the steep country around the valley.
