West Homestead, PA

West Homestead is a small Allegheny County borough on the Monongahela River, about eight miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The 2020 census counted 1,872 residents. Its streets climbed above a heavy industrial valley where brickworks, axle shops, car-wheel makers, and machinery plants once worked alongside the steel mills. Mesta Machinery was the big name: from 1898 to 1983, its West Homestead works supplied machinery used far beyond the borough. The old industrial story is still easy to see in the houses left behind.

The historic district is made up of hillside streets lined with late-19th- and early-20th-century working-class houses, along with homes associated with local glass-company owners and the Mesta Mansion. On the hill above it, the Village is a post-World War II neighborhood with a different feel and layout. Along the river, The Waterfront opened in 2000 on the former US Steel Works site, putting shops and restaurants on land once occupied by the valley's steel industry. In West Homestead, a short trip can move from old company houses to a redeveloped mill site, with the Monongahela tying both parts of the story together.
