West Jordan sits in the southwest part of the Salt Lake Valley, stretching from the banks of the Jordan River up toward the base of the Oquirrh Mountains. The community has pioneer roots dating back to 1849, best seen today at historic Gardner Village, where a restored 1850s flour mill is surrounded by brick walkways, local shops, and cozy bakeries. Over the decades, quiet farmland transformed into a sprawling, family-friendly suburb with quiet residential neighborhoods and plenty of modern conveniences. Getting around the valley is straightforward thanks to major corridors like Bangerter Highway and the UTA TRAX Red Line, which gives commuters a direct light-rail ride straight into downtown Salt Lake City and the University of Utah.

Daily activity revolves around several well-known hubs. Jordan Landing serves as the city’s primary retail center, packing department stores, grocery markets, casual dining, and a massive movie theater into one convenient location. Just down the road, Salt Lake Community College’s Jordan Campus trains future nurses and healthcare professionals. The city is also home to South Valley Regional Airport, a busy airfield that supports flight training, private aircraft, and emergency operations. With open land still available near the foothills and surrounding transit stations, local leaders are steering future development toward walkable city centers and new residential neighborhoods to keep pace with steady regional growth.

Community traditions keep neighbors connected throughout the year. Every Fourth of July, the city hosts the Western Stampede rodeo, an event running for more than seven decades that brings out thousands of spectators for fireworks, parades, and bull riding. During the summer, weekly Food Truck Tuesdays and outdoor concert series draw families out into the fresh air. Outdoor recreation is easy to find across more than 50 local parks and the paved Jordan River Parkway Trail. A standout favorite is Wheels Park, a state-of-the-art pump track and skate park creatively built with repurposed mining truck beds and giant tires from the nearby Oquirrh copper mines.
