West Kill, NY

West Kill is a hamlet in the town of Lexington, tucked into Greene County's upper West Kill valley in the Catskills. The stream runs through the settlement and gives the place its name, while the surrounding mountains and forest make the valley feel like a long, narrow room. West Kill grew around water and timber. A tannery opened here in 1821, another followed in 1830, and a post office arrived in 1833 as the upper valley filled out. The hemlock bark that fed the tanneries eventually ran short, leaving the hamlet with a story that is very Catskills: industry arrived for the forest, then had to find a new footing when the forest economy changed.

Today the creek remains the local thread, with fishing access and the roads through Lexington tying the hamlet to the wider Greene County landscape. West Kill also has a literary and sporting footnote: fly-fishing writer Art Flick lived nearby and ran the West Kill Tavern. The post office, houses, stream crossings, and mountain roads keep the hamlet legible as a place, even as the old tannery economy has gone. West Kill is a Catskill valley community shaped by a creek, a vanished bark trade, and the stubborn pull of the mountains.
