About West Liberty

West Liberty is a Logan County village laid out in 1817 beside the Mad River. Its first engine was a gristmill established the year before, followed by a store, hotel, and post office; by 1834 the village was incorporated. The Mad River still traces the edge of town, and the old mill story points to the spot where the settlement took shape. West Liberty also sits in the landscape of the Shawnee Mac-A-Cheek towns, so local history reaches back before the village plat. The local shorthand is mill, river, U.S. 68, and a history society that still marks the town’s 1880 fire with an annual Fire Sale.
