West Mansfield, OH

West Mansfield was laid out in 1848 by Levi Southard, who named the village for his infant son. Early stores, blacksmith shops, churches, a tavern, and a school gave the place a working center; the post office followed in the nineteenth century. The T. and O.C. Railroad arrived in 1893 and helped West Mansfield grow into a small manufacturing town. The Van Cleve Clay Manufacturing Company made drainage and building tile for markets far beyond Logan County, while a bank, hotels, shops, and a city hall filled out the village around it.

Rail service eventually ended, but West Mansfield kept adapting. A 13-acre lake and the West Mansfield Conservation Club now occupy part of the old industrial landscape, with fish fries, trap shooting, and community events adding to the local calendar. The Logan County Library branch, post office, grocery, machine company, churches, and village government handle the daily basics, while Bellefontaine and Marysville provide larger services. West Mansfield still has the compact feel of a railroad village, but its present rhythm comes from residents, small businesses, outdoor gatherings, and the county roads around them.
