West Mountain, CT

West Mountain is a census-designated place on the western side of Ridgefield, Connecticut, where the town reaches toward North Salem and Lewisboro, New York. The 2020 census counted 603 residents. It feels less like a separate downtown than a named piece of Ridgefield’s landscape: newer homes sit around an older core, and the area’s defining feature is the West Mountain Historic District.

That district covers 425 acres near the center of the CDP and preserves a group of early twentieth-century country estates and their associated buildings. The result is a place where a drive can shift quickly from ordinary Ridgefield roads to a landscape shaped by large historic properties, stonework, mature trees, and carefully retained outbuildings. West Mountain was first listed as a CDP before the 2020 census, so its boundaries are relatively new even though the preserved district is much older. If you are trying to get a feel for this corner of Fairfield County, the contrast between the newer residences and the preserved estate landscape is the key.
