West Pittsburg, PA

West Pittsburg is an unincorporated Lawrence County census-designated place in southern Taylor Township. The 2010 census counted 808 residents. It lies in the Beaver River valley five miles south of New Castle, with Pennsylvania Route 168 serving as the main north-south street and crossing the river at the southern end of the community. Pittsburgh is about 46 miles to the south-southeast, but New Castle is the closer daily reference point.

West Pittsburg began as a manufacturing center in 1902, and its school history follows that growth. Valley Way, Sheep Hill, and Pleasant Hill one-room schools served nearby neighborhoods before the Shenango-Taylor Joint District opened in 1923. The river valley also keeps the settlement tied to New Castle's employment and shopping network. Route 168, the Beaver River, railroad traces, and the old school sites all belong to the same industrial-valley map. West Pittsburg remains a small community whose shape comes from transportation, manufacturing, and the river corridor between New Castle and the Ohio border country.
