Despite what the map suggests, West St. Paul sits directly south of Saint Paul. The quirky name dates back to the late nineteenth century when an earlier settlement sat on the west bank of the Mississippi River, and the label stayed even after modern borders formed in northern Dakota County. Today, it is an established, close-knit suburb of about 22,000 residents that feels like a natural extension of the capital city. It also connects to Thompson County Park's scenic lake and the newly renovated Wentworth Library. During summer, the annual Explore West St. Paul Days festival brings everyone together at Harmon Park for live music, parades, and fireworks.
