Westfield, NY

Westfield village is a Chautauqua County village of 2,993 people at the 2020 census, set around Chautauqua Creek in the western New York grape country. The village lies inside the much larger Town of Westfield, but its own streets gather around Main Street, Portage Street, U.S. 20, and New York 394. The early settlement was called Cross Roads because it sat at the meeting of the old Portage Trail and the Buffalo-Erie road; that crossing still makes the village easy to read.

Concord grapes arrived as a major crop in 1859, and Dr. Charles Welch built the world's first large grape-juice plant here in 1897. The village kept that agricultural connection through Welch's processing and the vineyards around Lake Erie. The Portage Trail and Main Street historic districts preserve older houses and storefronts, while Patterson Library, Westfield Memorial Hospital, grape-related businesses, and the road to Barcelona Harbor fill in current landmarks. This is the village footprint, not the full Town of Westfield: a compact creek-and-grape center with the lake, vineyards, and portage routes close by.
