Westminster, VT

Westminster is a Windham County village on U.S. Route 5 in southeastern Vermont's Connecticut River valley. The village center was laid out in 1736 and 1737 with a very broad Main Street, and that plan still sets the shape of the place. Most of the village is within the Westminster Village Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1988. The 2020 census counted 287 residents. Westminster also carries a Revolutionary-era political history: meetings held here helped move Vermont toward independence in the 1770s.

The broad main road runs between School Street, Grout Avenue, Cox Road, and the old cemetery. The district's buildings include houses, a church, town hall, post office, village store, and community library. The Westminster Institute and Butterfield Library continue that civic pattern with an auditorium, stage, community room, social spaces, playground, and ball field. U.S. Route 5 still does the everyday work of carrying people through the village. Westminster is a small Connecticut River settlement whose colonial street plan and local institutions remain easy to see from the highway.
