About Westphalia

Westphalia is a Knox County census-designated place with 181 residents and 113 housing units in the 2020 Census. A digitized 1886 Knox County town history says Westphalia was laid out and surveyed in December 1881 for Frederick Pohlmeir, placed on the Indianapolis and Vincennes Railroad, and named for Westphalia in Europe; the surrounding community was largely German. Indiana's 1911 soil survey identifies Westphalia as a German settlement and trading center. Its Census footprint covers 5,340,089 square meters of land. The place's record combines railroad-era platting with agricultural county history.
