Westphalia, MO

Westphalia wears its origins openly. The city was platted in 1835 and named for Westphalia in Germany, reflecting the homeland of many early settlers. A post office has operated here since 1848, so the name has stayed tied to the same place through generations of mail, school days, and county routines. German heritage remains part of the local character, not as a museum label but as a thread that still helps distinguish Westphalia from the other crossroads in Osage County.

On U.S. 63, about 12 miles southeast of Jefferson City, Westphalia sits between waterways that give the map some definition. The Maries River runs along the south and east sides, while the Osage River is about two miles to the northwest. The Osage County R-III School District keeps education close to the town’s daily rhythm, and historic properties listed on the National Register add another layer to the streetscape. Westphalia’s appeal is in that mix: German-rooted beginnings, river country, and a present-day community still tied to its county.
