Wheatland, IA

Wheatland is a Clinton County city with 775 residents in the 2020 census, set in eastern Iowa’s farm country. Local roads connect the city to Calamus, Low Moor, and the surrounding Spring Rock Township. The city’s school connection reaches beyond its limits: Calamus–Wheatland Community School District operates the public schools, with the high school in Wheatland. A compact grid of streets, churches, City Hall, and a Carnegie library gives the town a readable center.

Wheatland was platted in 1858 under John Bennett and legally incorporated in 1869. The name comes from President James Buchanan’s Wheatland estate in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Many early settlers came from Wunderthausen in central Germany; St. Paul’s United Church of Christ grew from the German Reformed congregation formed in 1861. The school district formed in 1985 when Calamus and Wheatland districts merged, giving the two towns a shared institutional map. Wheatland is an Iowa city whose German church history and consolidated school system remain tied to an 1858 plan.
