About Wheeler

Wheeler is the Wheeler County seat on the eastern edge of the Texas Panhandle, a courthouse town with farming, ranching, and petroleum country around it. Two ranchers surveyed the present site in 1904, then pushed for the county seat to move from Mobeetie; a contested election settled the question, and the courthouse followed. The city and county both honor Royall Tyler Wheeler, a former chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Wheeler is Panhandle Texas in a straight-line pattern: courthouse, county roads, dry horizons, and the Oklahoma line nearby.
