White Hall, IL

White Hall is a Greene County city in west-central Illinois, about 60 miles southwest of Springfield, with U.S. 67 running straight through the heart of town. David Barrow laid out the first plats in 1832 after settlers had already begun arriving, and the post office has served White Hall since 1827. A long white tavern helped give the town its name, while local clay later made stoneware and sewer tile a major part of the town's industrial story.

Today's White Hall still works as a county-road town with a recognizable main corridor. City Hall handles utilities, public notices, police contacts, and municipal business, while manufacturers and local businesses provide jobs along and beyond U.S. 67. The White Hall Historic District covers part of the older street grid, and the White Hall Pottery Center keeps the ceramics history within reach. White Hall's texture comes from that overlap: stage-road origins, clay and kilns, highway traffic, and a town office doing the daily work.
