About White Lake CDP (Sullivan County)
White Lake is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Bethel, Sullivan County, on the southeastern shore of the lake that gives it its name. The water, White Lake Road and County Route 55, and the nearby Route 17B corridor set the local geography. It has its own post office and mailing address, but the place is still best understood as a lakeside hamlet rather than a standalone town.
The local history runs from work to resort life. A sawmill and gristmill were established at the lake outlet around 1804, and a hotel followed in 1811, beginning White Lake's long run as a summer destination. In 1969, it was the closest community to the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, putting the hamlet on the festival's local map. Today White Lake sits inside a Bethel landscape shaped by tourism, agriculture, and the lake itself. The local scoop is that White Lake carries both the old mill-and-hotel story and the Woodstock-era association.
