Whitecone, AZ

Whitecone is a Navajo County census-designated place on the Navajo Nation, with 768 residents in the 2020 census and a broad 45.1-square-mile all-land boundary at about 6,086 feet. The place's name comes from Be'ak'id baa'aoogeed, the local White Cone chapter, whose elders connect it to a trader or trading-post manager who dug a well beside a livestock pond. The chapter was first certified in 1957, and its meeting house moved to the present site in 1988.

White Cone Chapter organizes community meetings and programs, including a senior center and local economic and infrastructure work. The chapter remains the main civic meeting place. Cedar Unified School District and Holbrook Unified School District divide the local school area, while Highway 77 gives the widely spaced community a regional spine. Whitecone's local picture is carried by the chapter house, old trading post, school, and livestock landscape. The result is a Navajo Nation community with a broad geographic boundary and a civic life organized through chapter institutions.
