Whitefield, NH

Whitefield is a Coos County town on the northern edge of the White Mountains, with the Johns River running through its center and Forest Lake on the Dalton town line. The town was chartered in 1774 and incorporated in 1804, and its older economy mixed farming and lumber before the railroad and mountain tourism widened the local map. Mount Washington Regional Airport sits east of the village, while White Mountains Regional High School serves the surrounding area. U.S. 3, New Hampshire 116, and New Hampshire 142 meet at the central village, giving Whitefield a road junction to match its river and mountain setting. The town's name may honor evangelist George Whitefield, though another tradition ties it to the snowy fields seen from the mountain passes.
