Whitehall, NY

Whitehall is a Washington County town at the southern end of Lake Champlain, where Wood Creek, the lake, and the Champlain Canal meet near the Vermont line. Founded as Skenesborough in 1759, it grew around waterborne trade, mills, an iron foundry, and its position on the north–south route between Canada and the Hudson Valley. During the Revolution, Benedict Arnold and Philip Schuyler used the harbor to build a fleet for the Battle of Valcour, giving Whitehall its long-standing “Birthplace of the United States Navy” association. The Champlain Canal reached Whitehall in 1819, and the railroad arrived in 1848, carrying the town into a new era of shipping, passengers, and industry.

Those layers remain visible around the village and harbor. The Skenesborough Museum occupies a 1917 canal terminal and interprets the Revolutionary shipyard; the Lake Champlain Canal’s northern entrance and Whitehall Marina sit nearby. The town’s geography still points in several directions at once: toward Vermont, down the canal to the Hudson, and north across Lake Champlain. Whitehall is a small place whose present-day streets and waterfront are organized by transportation routes that have been in use for centuries.
