Whitehall, OH

Whitehall sits just east of downtown Columbus, built largely around two major landmarks along East Broad Street. One is the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC), a massive federal logistics base that has anchored the local job market for decades. The other is Town & Country, founded in 1947 as one of the country's earliest suburban shopping centers. As these hubs grew after World War II, neighborhoods popped up quickly to house the influx of workers. Today, that history gives the city its signature look, filled with classic 1950s brick ranches, Cape Cods, and twin-single homes that remain some of the more budget-friendly entry points into the Columbus metro area.

Whitehall is compact and easy to get around, spanning roughly five square miles between Main Street, Broad Street, and Yearling Road. Green space is easy to find along the eastern edge, where Big Walnut Creek flows past Whitehall Community Park. The park offers wooded walking trails, a disc golf course, and a local branch of the YMCA. Over on Etna Road, John Bishop Park serves as the go-to spot for youth sports, community events, and a popular summer splash pad. Between the neighborhood parks, diverse local dining, and quick access to major Columbus highways, getting your daily errands done is simple.

If you are house hunting here, keep in mind that most of Whitehall's housing stock dates back to the mid-20th century. Older homes often come with decades of DIY projects and renovations, so it pays to review city building permits for things like electrical updates, roof replacements, and finished basements. Because residential streets often sit close to busy retail strips or the defense base, traffic can change dramatically throughout the day. It helps to drive by a prospective home during the morning DSCC shift change, afternoon school dismissal, and weekend retail peaks. If you look near the creek, check the local flood maps as well to see if special insurance or building restrictions apply to the lot.
