About Whitesburg

Whitesburg is a city in Carroll County, Georgia, along the Chattahoochee River in the county’s southeastern corner. The 2020 census counted 596 residents. U.S. Route 27 Alternate and Georgia State Route 5 pass through town, linking the river community with Carrollton, Villa Rica, and the roads toward Alabama. The river forms the city’s strongest geographic line, with wooded banks and low countryside beyond the streets. Carroll County services and schools connect Whitesburg to the rest of the county.

The area was home to Creek communities before the town developed under the later settlement of west Georgia. Whitesburg grew around the river crossing and the roads that carried farm goods and travelers through Carroll County. The old routes still shape the town’s daily map, while the Chattahoochee gives it a distinct edge. Local history follows the water: Indigenous presence, settlement, crossings, and the river’s role in moving people and goods. Whitesburg is a small Georgia city whose main roads lead back to the Chattahoochee and the long human history of the river valley.
