Whiting, IA

Whiting is a city in Monona County, Iowa, on the western edge of the state’s Loess Hills country. The 2020 census counted 745 residents. The city’s post office has operated since 1873, and the Whiting Community School District keeps local education centered in town. Farm roads connect Whiting with the Missouri River valley and the nearby communities of Onawa and Sloan. The streets are part of a broad agricultural landscape, but the post office and library give the city a civic center that has lasted through several generations.

Whiting was named for Charles E. Whiting, whose family helped establish the community and its early businesses. A local library began in 1913 after five residents created an endowment and neighbors added their support; the city assumed financial support in 1928. That library history fits Whiting’s larger pattern, where schools, mail, and volunteer institutions make a small Iowa city work. The city’s name comes from a family, its school serves the surrounding country, and its roads lead toward the Missouri.
