Williamstown, PA

Williamstown is a Dauphin County borough in the Wiconisco Creek valley, between Big Lick Mountain and Berry Mountain northeast of Harrisburg. Its history was written in anthracite: tunneling through Big Lick Mountain began in the 1850s, the Williamstown Colliery shipped coal by the 1860s, and the borough later carried the work of mines, railroads, hosiery mills, and Main Street businesses. The mountains make the settlement feel enclosed even when the valley road is busy.

U.S. Route 209 passes south of town, linking Williamstown with Pottsville, Elizabethville, Millersburg, and the larger Susquehanna Valley. The nearby Wiconisco Creek Park offers fields, walking paths, a pavilion, and disc golf beside the creek, while local government and borough streets sit within the old coal-town frame. Mine openings and breakers are part of the landscape's memory, even as recreation and residential life fill the valley now. The valley remains inhabited.
