Willow, AK

Willow is a spread-out rural community in Alaska's Mat-Su Valley, located along the Parks Highway about thirty miles north of Wasilla. With a population of around 2,200, the area first grew after gold was discovered on Willow Creek in 1897. Today, it attracts people who want space, privacy, and immediate access to the outdoors. Willow Creek and the nearby Susitna River are well known for salmon fishing and boating, and the road up toward Hatcher Pass gives residents an easy route into the Talkeetna Mountains for hiking and backcountry skiing.

Willow is also famous across Alaska as the official restart location for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race each March, with teams and spectators gathering at Willow Lake by the community center. For families, local kids attend Willow Elementary before continuing into nearby schools within the Mat-Su Borough School District. Daily life revolves around expansive lots, quiet lakes, and miles of snowmachine and dog mushing trails. Residents generally drive into Wasilla or Palmer for big-box shopping and medical care, trading suburban convenience for peaceful acreage and views of the Alaska Range.
