Willow Creek, MT

Willow Creek is a Gallatin County census-designated place where Willow Creek valley meets the Jefferson River valley, about six miles southwest of Three Forks. Settlement began in 1864, and a mining boom in Norwegian Gulch brought early attention. The Northern Pacific Railroad reached Willow Creek in 1883, shifting the settlement's center toward the rail line and tying it to the broader Gallatin Valley.

Today, the creek and river valleys still do most of the orienting. Interstate 90 lies about seven miles northeast, while local roads lead toward Three Forks and the agricultural country around the Jefferson. Willow Creek Public Schools serve most of the community; a portion lies in Three Forks districts. The place carries two timelines at once: a mining-era beginning and a railroad-era townsite set within western Montana's farm-and-river landscape. The old mining and railroad dates are still useful when following the valley roads toward the Jefferson River. Gallatin County's Three Forks area supplies the nearby regional reference point.
