Willowbrook's rail transfer station and medical campus face one another across a compact part of south Los Angeles County. At Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station, Metro's A and C light-rail lines meet local buses; a $129 million reconstruction completed in 2021 added expanded platforms, a larger transfer mezzanine, elevators, real-time information, and other passenger improvements. Across the area, the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Campus and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science form a second hub. Willowbrook is an unincorporated census-designated place rather than a city, and the 2020 census recorded 24,295 residents within 1.68 square miles of land. County planning now treats the station, medical and university grounds, Kenneth Hahn Plaza, surrounding neighborhoods, and nearby parks as a connected district. A transit-oriented specific plan effective in 2024 calls for better pedestrian links among those destinations while allowing additional housing, shops, and mixed-use development. Charles R. Drew University was founded in 1966 through organizing by Watts-Willowbrook residents after the Watts uprising.

It offers health-science, nursing, and medical programs and identifies itself as one of the nation's four historically Black medical colleges. A new Health Professions Education Building was designed to support its four-year medical-degree program with classrooms, shared spaces, and clinical-skills facilities. On the MLK campus, primary and urgent-care clinics moved into the Behavioral Health Center, a 500,000-square-foot building that combines outpatient care with behavioral-health and supportive services. Public recreation provides a different set of gathering places. The 104-acre Earvin “Magic” Johnson Recreation Area includes lakes, soccer fields, a fitness course, picnic shelters, play space, and walking paths. George Washington Carver Park and Mona Park add neighborhood-scale recreation closer to homes. Together, the rail station, health institutions, and county parks give Willowbrook several concrete centers of daily activity despite the absence of a municipal downtown.
