Wilmerding, PA

Wilmerding is an Allegheny County borough twelve miles southeast of Pittsburgh, set in the Turtle Creek valley on less than half a square mile. George Westinghouse purchased land here in 1887 and 1888 for the Westinghouse Air Brake Company, and the East Pittsburgh Improvement Company began laying out lots in 1889. The air-brake plant, foundries, and machine shops turned a farming valley into an industrial borough whose name became closely tied to railroad technology.

Wilmerding’s built landscape still carries that shift. The Westinghouse Air Brake Company General Office Building, built in 1889–90 and rebuilt in 1896, is listed on the National Register, while Airbrake Avenue and the old industrial parcels keep the company’s presence visible in the street plan. East Allegheny School District serves the borough, and the 2020 census counted 1,781 residents. Wilmerding sits in Pittsburgh’s orbit, but it is not simply a suburb: the valley, the factory history, and the borough’s tight street grid give it a distinct industrial identity of its own.
