About Wilmerding

Wilmerding is a compact borough in the Turtle Creek valley, about twelve miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. The town was founded in the late 19th century by industrialist George Westinghouse, who built his air brake plant here and laid out a model community for his workers. That history shaped the entire neighborhood, turning a quiet farming hollow into a busy railroad town with a tight, walkable street grid.

You can still see that legacy across the borough today, most noticeably in the grand Westinghouse Castle overlooking the valley. With around 1,800 residents, Wilmerding offers affordable brick homes, quiet residential streets, and local schools in the East Allegheny School District. It gives residents a classic small-town feel with straightforward road connections for an easy commute into Pittsburgh.
