Wilmington, VT

Wilmington is the primary village and census-designated place in the town of Wilmington, Windham County, Vermont. The 2020 census counted 439 residents in the CDP, compared with 2,255 across the entire town. The village lies in the North Branch of the Deerfield River valley on the eastern side of the Green Mountains. The river and the meeting of stage routes moved the town center from Lisle Hill to the present village, where waterpower once served mills and Route 9 later carried travelers through the valley.

Much of the center is included in the Wilmington Village Historic District, with 59 historically significant buildings along Route 9 and Route 100. Memorial Hall and the Crafts Inn are among the prominent early twentieth-century buildings, while older shops and houses keep the nineteenth-century village plan readable. Harriman Reservoir lies downstream, and the Deerfield Valley's winter-sports economy brings another seasonal layer to the town. Wilmington's CDP is the village core inside a larger mountain town: a river-powered crossroads with a historic center and a modern recreation economy.
