Winfield, TN

Winfield is a Scott County town just south of the Tennessee-Kentucky line, with Scott Highway carrying traffic through a mostly residential community. The 2020 census counted 947 residents. The settlement was first called Chitwood for Revolutionary War veteran Captain James Chitwood, whose family settled the area extensively. After the Civil War, the name changed, and Winfield was chosen to honor General Winfield Scott, the namesake of the county.

Chitwood Mountain rises to 2,139 feet, giving Winfield a strong landmark above the town's streets and homes. The town incorporated under a mayor-alderman form in 1983, and local government handles utilities, garbage, and the small set of services that keep the community functioning. Winfield's setting gives the town its character: a border town at the foot of a mountain, close to the commercial routes of Scott County but still shaped by the old Chitwood family story and the hills around the New River country. The mountain is part of the view from town.
