Winnebago, MN

Winnebago is a Faribault County city on US 169 and Minnesota 109, about 28 miles south of Mankato and ten miles from I-90. The settlement began as Winnebago City in 1856, when it was laid out as a railroad town, and the city name shortened in 1905. Rail, mail routes, and later agricultural manufacturing gave the town a regional role; a canning plant opened in 1925, processing sweet peas and corn. The city's name also carries a complicated history, tied to the displacement of Native people to a nearby reservation after they were moved from the Long Prairie area.

Today Winnebago has the everyday equipment of a county-road town: a downtown, school, grocery store, medical clinic, dentist, parks, and swimming pool. US 169 remains the big north-south line, with Mankato to the north and I-90 to the south. The old railroad layout and agricultural work history still sit underneath the modern service network. Winnebago's local story is a small-city balance of routes and institutions, with the name's Indigenous history kept in view alongside the businesses, school, and public spaces that serve residents now.
