Winner, SD

Winner is the Tripp County seat in south-central South Dakota, with 2,921 residents at the 2020 census. Its courthouse role reaches beyond the city limits: neighboring Todd County has no county seat of its own, so several county offices in Winner handle work for both counties. Highways 18, 183, and 44 meet the town's regional service role, and Winner Regional Airport adds another point of connection across the open country.

The town moved into its present position after Lamro, the first Tripp County seat, was platted about two and a half miles away in 1907. The county-seat election of November 1910 gave Winner the decisive edge, and the courthouse followed; a fire in January 1911 added another early chapter. The name came from the belief that the new railroad town would win the county-seat contest. Today the courthouse, schools, roads, airport, and agricultural businesses all point to the same basic idea: Winner is a small town carrying an unusually large administrative load for the surrounding prairie.
