About Winnetka
Today’s Green Bay Trail in Winnetka follows the former Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee electric-rail line, which carried 140 trains a day through the village at its World War II peak. The line was removed in 1955 and reborn as a trail in 1967. Winnetka’s association with the Green Bay Trail name is older: the Erastus Patterson family arrived by ox-drawn wagon in 1836 and built a log tavern beside the post road for travelers. Winnetka’s population was 12,744 in 2020. Illinois chartered the village in 1869, the same year Charles and Sarah Peck donated the Village Green.
