Winona, MO

Winona is a city in southeast Shannon County, in the Missouri Ozarks. Its post office has operated since 1888, and the community took its name from Winona, Minnesota, the native home of an area lumberman. The name also carries a second layer: Winona is a Sioux word meaning "first born." U.S. Route 60 and Missouri Route 19 meet at the city, placing the local map at a clear road junction between Birch Tree, Eminence, and Van Buren.

The city lies within the Mark Twain National Forest, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of wooded Ozark hills, creek valleys, and long highway stretches. Winona R-III School District handles public education, while the Winona Public Library gives the town a small civic institution of its own.
