Winter Harbor, ME

Winter Harbor is a census-designated place and the main village within the Town of Winter Harbor on Maine’s Schoodic Peninsula. The 2020 census counted 385 residents in the CDP. The village sits at the northern end of Winter Harbor, an inlet on the east side of Frenchman Bay, with Prospect Harbor nearby and the rocky coast opening toward the Gulf of Maine. The protected water has long supported boats, working waterfronts, and seasonal travel.

The town’s Winter Harbor Schoolhouse, a two-story building in the center of the village, records the community’s late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century school life. Winter Harbor also carries a military chapter from the naval station and communications facilities that once operated on the Schoodic Peninsula. Today the Schoodic Institute’s education and research center and nearby Acadia National Park connect the village to science, conservation, and coastal travel. Winter Harbor remains a small harbor settlement with a village center, a working shoreline, and a broad view across Frenchman Bay.
