Wishek, ND

Wishek is a McIntosh County city platted in 1898 when the railroad reached south-central North Dakota. The post office opened that year, and the city was named for John H. Wishek Sr., a local cattleman who helped German settlers from Russia find land and build communities in the region. The 2020 census counted 864 residents. North Dakota Highways 3 and 13 meet near the city, connecting rolling farm country with the larger towns and roads of the state.

German-Russian heritage still shapes Wishek's community calendar, architecture, food, and family histories. The city grew around grain, livestock, local shops, schools, churches, and the railroad, with agricultural work continuing to define the surrounding hills and open spaces. The Old Wishek City Hall, built in 1916, remains part of the city's civic memory even after the building's later demolition. Wishek today pairs a working farm-service center with a strong immigrant-settlement story, all held together by the railroad plat and the roads that replaced it.
