Wolf Point, MT

Wolf Point is Roosevelt County’s seat on the north bank of the Missouri River, at the mouth of Wolf Creek in northeastern Montana. The 2020 census counted 2,517 residents. It is the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, and the river, reservation, county offices, and railroad all meet in the same broad valley. The first non-Indigenous settlement took shape in the 1870s, after the area had already been part of a much older trading and travel landscape.

The railroad arrived with a depot in an old boxcar and gave Wolf Point a more durable place on the map. The Fort Peck Reservation opened to homesteading in 1914, adding another major chapter to the town’s history. Wolf Point’s calendar keeps that layered past visible: the Wild Horse Stampede began in 1915 and is known as Montana’s oldest rodeo, while the Wadopana Pow-wow carries a separate, long-standing cultural tradition. The Wolf Point Area Museum, Fort Peck Community College, and the riverfront all fill in the story around the county-seat sign.
