Woodbourne, NY

Woodbourne is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Fallsburg, Sullivan County, where New York Routes 42 and 52 meet and briefly overlap across the Neversink River. The 2020 census counted 411 residents. That road-and-river junction is the practical center of the community, set within the Catskills and connected to neighboring Fallsburg hamlets by the same mountain routes.

European settlement in the northern part of Fallsburg began in the 1780s, and Gabriel Ludlum moved his law practice there in 1830, giving the area the Woodbourne name. Later, the hamlet became part of the Catskills’ Borscht Belt, with summer hotels, bungalow colonies, and boarding houses that filled out the seasonal economy. The Center Theatre, listed on the National Register in 2001, still marks that entertainment history along the highway, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception adds another longstanding local landmark. Woodbourne today sits at the meeting of a road crossroads, a seasonal resort past, and institutions that remain visible in the hamlet.
