Woodland, ME

Woodland is a census-designated place within Baileyville in Washington County, Maine, on the Saint Croix River near the Canadian border. The 2010 census counted 952 residents. The village was first known as Sprague's Falls, then renamed Woodland by the postmaster general in 1906; for much of the twentieth century, the name Woodland also served as the postal address for Baileyville. Maine later kept Baileyville as the town's legal name, leaving Woodland as the village and CDP name used in local geography.

Water power made this place a mill community. Sawmills and paper mills used logs and pulpwood floated down the Saint Croix, and the Maine Central Railroad connected the mills to the national rail network. By 1973, the Georgia-Pacific operation handled over 6,000 rail carloads. The mill complex continues through Woodland Pulp and St. Croix Tissue, keeping paper and pulp production in the town's working landscape. Woodland is therefore a river-and-rail village whose name, industrial history, and present-day mill all describe the same stretch of Baileyville.
