Woodlawn, NC

Woodlawn is a small census-designated place in Alamance County, in the Piedmont between Burlington and Mebane. The 2020 census counted 912 residents. It is the kind of place whose character comes through in the surrounding county as much as in a dense center: roads thread through a rural landscape, while the Burlington–Mebane area supplies the larger services and daily destinations. Its small size is part of the point: Woodlawn is a named corner of a much larger county.

The strongest local landmark is Woodlawn School, a historic building that later served as a community center. That detail matters because it gives the place a visible gathering point and ties the present-day CDP to the older farming and mill history of Alamance County. The county grew around farms, water-powered mills, and textile production along the Haw River, and Woodlawn sits within that broader Piedmont story. With no single commercial strip defining the place, Woodlawn is best understood as a small county community with a named historic center and easy access to the larger towns around it.
