Woodside, DE

Woodside is a small Kent County town in the farm country south of Dover, built around the old Delaware Railroad line. The Cowgill family helped bring a depot here in 1864, first called Willow Grove Station, and the post office began as Fredonia. The General Assembly changed the village's name to Woodside in 1869. Rail made the community a shipping point for peaches, tomatoes, grain, and other produce, and the town's early-twentieth-century growth came straight out of the surrounding farms.

Main Street and the old rail corridor still give Woodside its shape. The town is in Caesar Rodney School District, with Nellie Hughes Stokes Elementary and Fred Fifer III Middle School in Camden, while Dover handles larger shopping, work, and government trips. A small municipal footprint makes the place feel more like a village crossroads than a suburb. Woodside's local scoop is the old Fredonia-to-Woodside name change and the railroad story behind it: the town grew because farm families needed a station, a post office, and a way to move the harvest.
