Woodsville, NH

At the 2020 census, Woodsville was a Haverhill census-designated place of 1,431 people at the meeting of the Connecticut and Ammonoosuc rivers. Before the railroad, it was a logging community. John L. Woods arrived from Wells River, Vermont, bought a sawmill near the confluence in 1829, opened a store, and gave the village its name. Log booms held timber on the Connecticut, while the rivers carried it toward mills and larger communities downstream.

The Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad arrived in 1853 with division offices and a repair shop, turning Woodsville into a railway town with inns, taverns, Victorian buildings, and a serious commercial role. In 1889, Grafton County Court moved here from Haverhill Corner; the courthouse moved to North Haverhill in 1972, but Woodsville remains Haverhill’s commercial center. The village’s location still does the work: Vermont is across the Connecticut, the Ammonoosuc reaches the river just north of town, and the old railroad routes show why a place this small once handled logs, lawyers, trains, and regional shopping all at once.
