Wurtsboro, NY

Wurtsboro's present village street follows an older transportation story. The Wurts brothers gave it their name after the area's coal and canal era took hold; the Delaware and Hudson Canal reached the village in 1850 and operated until 1942, and the Ontario and Western Railroad later carried people and goods through Sullivan County. U.S. 209 runs through town near the Route 17 corridor, keeping Wurtsboro tied to the Catskills and the Hudson Valley. The old canal corridor remains legible in the landscape today.

The canal is the clearest way to read the place. Mamakating's D&H Canal Linear Park preserves the towpath and lock remains, and the Long Path passes through Wurtsboro. Shops and restaurants occupy the village's storefronts, while Wurtsboro-Sullivan County Airport has served the area since 1927 and remains part of its transportation history. Historic resources include the Mamakating Park Historic District and Masten-Quinn House.
