Wymore, NE

Wymore is a Gage County city at the junction of Big Indian Creek and the Blue River, a landscape that helped make it a natural railroad town. Samuel Wymore donated the land, and the town was platted in 1881 for the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. Two blocks of businesses reportedly appeared within 16 days, giving Wymore a fast start. The city’s parks, river bottoms, and rail corridors still show the outline of that early growth.

Welsh immigration gave Wymore its strongest cultural thread. Generations of Welsh settlers established a Welsh-language church, school, and cemetery, and the city is known as the Welsh Capital of the Great Plains. The Great Plains Welsh Heritage Centre preserves that story alongside the Pleasant View Schoolhouse and Burlington Park Railroad Museum. Sam Wymore Days each June adds a current community tradition to the older railroad and immigrant history.
