Wyoming, RI

Wyoming is a village and census-designated place on the Wood River in southern Rhode Island, mostly in Richmond and extending across the river into Hopkinton. The 2020 census counted 415 residents. Settled in 1757, the village grew around waterpower: Brand’s Iron Works operated on the Hopkinton side by 1787, and Brothers Cotton Mill began on the Richmond side in 1814. The river made industry possible and still gives Wyoming its shape.

The Wyoming Village Historic District follows the old crossroads around Routes 138 and 3, Old Nooseneck Hill Road, Bridge Street, and Prospect Street. Federal, Greek Revival, and Late Victorian buildings sit alongside the Wood River and the village post office. The river’s mill sites still give the village its strongest sense of continuity. The district was added to the National Register in 1974, but its older industrial pattern remains the main local clue. Wyoming is a Rhode Island village where a river, ironworks, a cotton mill, and two town lines meet.
