Yanceyville, NC

Yanceyville is Caswell County’s seat in North Carolina’s Piedmont. The 2020 census counted 1,937 residents. It began in 1792 as Caswell Court House, then took the Yanceyville name in 1833, likely for Bartlett Yancey Jr. The county’s tobacco boom filled the town with merchants, tradespeople, lawyers, and imposing houses; the Caswell County Courthouse, completed in 1861, still faces Court Square. The rounded shape of the original municipality is an odd bit of local lore: early town jurisdiction extended a half mile from the courthouse in every direction.

These days, downtown activity runs through the courthouse square, Richmond-Miles History Museum, local shops, and CoSquare, a county-supported coworking space for small businesses and remote workers. Maud Gatewood Park and the arboretum offer town-center places to stretch legs, while Gatewood’s art and local veterans’ memorials add more community history. The Bright Leaf Hoedown brings food, music, crafts, nonprofits, and the county crowd to the square each September; summer fireworks add another date. Bartlett Yancey High School and a Piedmont Community College branch keep education in the local mix. Yanceyville feels like a county seat in the old-fashioned sense: courthouse, schools, small enterprise, and annual gatherings all meet within a compact town center.
